AI providers

Every AI action has a Provider field. You can change it in the action settings, even if you have not added an API key yet.

Google Gemini is selected by default because it can run without your own key.

WeWeb Cloud

WeWeb Cloud is WeWeb calling the model for you. You do not need an API key. WeWeb sends the request to the provider, then bills the usage to your workspace.

It is not a fourth option in Provider. It is the default path when a provider can run without your key.

Today, that is only Google Gemini. If you leave Gemini selected and do not add a Gemini key, the action uses WeWeb Cloud.

Your workspace has a free $1 credit. After that, usage is billed at cost for projects on a paid plan with auto-charge enabled. You can set a monthly cap in workspace billing.

Your own API key

Use your own key when you want OpenAI or Anthropic, or when you want Gemini billed to your Google account instead of WeWeb.

You can select OpenAI or Anthropic in Provider at any time. Those providers do not run through WeWeb Cloud. Without a key, the action shows API key required, and the Model list stays empty until you add one.

To add a key:

  1. Go to the Data & API tab, then open the AI subtab.
  2. Open AI Providers.
  3. Expand the provider (Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic).
  4. Choose the environment (Editor, Staging, or Production).
  5. Paste the API Key and click Save.

You can use a different key per environment. A provider with no key shows Using WeWeb Cloud. After you save a key, it shows Using your own AI API key.

Common pitfalls

The provider asks for an API key

OpenAI and Anthropic always need your own key. Add it in Data & APIAIAI Providers, or switch the action to Google Gemini.
